• You need to be very specific. If you’re promoting grills, you can’t just bid on the keyword “grill” and except big things to happen.  Even “Weber grills” is probably not specific enough.  You want people who are very close to knowing exactly what they want, as they are the most likely ones to convert to sales.
• Modifiers can mean big money.  Often, merchants advertise their goods with brand names and colors and model numbers.  A lot of them, however, forget that consumers also search things like “cute recycling bins” or “stylish blue flats”.  These less common modifiers can be easier to rank for and much more profitable for the average affiliate.
• Not all products work for paid advertising. If you’re promoting a $5 product with a 10% commission, your take on each sale is going to be $.50.  If you’re paying .25 cents/click, that’s not a margin you can support for long.  It’s better to focus on products with a minimum of $10/sale for the average transaction.
• SEO is your friend. When margins are tight on PPC, you can dramatically improve your overall profits with the SEO traffic that continues to come even after campaigns have failed through paid traffic methods.  With a properly optimized site, no paid traffic test is ever completely wasted.
• Finding ways to keep your visitors can be the difference between a super affiliate and a struggling affiliate. You put a lot of time into getting people to your sites, so it makes sense that you should also spend time building a newsletter or otherwise bringing your traffic back again and again.  It’s not about single commissions anymore.

Building an email newsletter or customer list is one of the best long-term investments you can make as an affiliate.  Your traffic can disappear, and your conversion rates can drop off, but as long as you have a good list of people you can market to, you have a real, long-term asset that costs almost nothing to maintain.

• Don’t wait too long to mail your list. Having had the opportunity to see a lot of affiliate websites over the years, I’ve noticed that a lot of affiliates have great marketing skills until it comes to their domain name.  Given that it’s such an easy thing to master, I wanted to offer up a few tips that can help you out next time you’re picking a domain for one of your affiliate sites.

• If you’re doing PPV, your domain name is of very little importance.
• If you’re doing PPC, make sure that your domain name (a) conveys professionalism and (b) includes your keywords
• Avoid hyphens wherever possible.  If you must use them, limit it to just one.  the more you get, the more spammy your site starts to look.
• Try not to use “the best” or “top” or “great” in your domain name.  These descriptive words make many users perceive your site as “cheap” or unprofessional.  Suppose you are reviewing anti virus products.  You’re much better off calling your site something like “Skyview Anti-Virus” or “Armored Anti-Virus” (just some random “brand-sounding” word) instead of “Great Anti Virus” or “Best Anti Virus”.  If you have to SAY it’s great or the best, it often has the opposite effect in the mind of your target.
• Don’t go too keyword crazy, either.  AntiMalwareRemoveSpywareFromMyComputer.com isn’t going to look trustworthy to many people.
• If you’re doing SEO, domain name takes on a whole new level of importance.  Pick a main root keyword and make sure it is in your domain name.
